News Update: Lakowe Golf Course

MEMBERS of Lakowe Lakes Golf and Country Estate, Lekki, Lagos, invited guests and sponsors, will be in for a great golfing experience  tomorrow when the latest golf club in Lagos turns one.

Inaugurated a year ago, the facility operated by International Management Group (IMG), has taken the liberty to stage a double-pronged event, which will mark its first year anniversary as well as Nigeria’s independence anniversary.

Tagged “Scramble Team Golf Tournament,” the tourney will see golfers file out in teams of four players (from the same nationality), where they will attempt to beat the course in an exciting encounter, where a prize has been set aside for the best dressed team.

The competitors would, thereafter be treated to a buffet lunch with a standby disc jockey serenading them. Prize presentation and lucky draw scheduled for the clubhouse, are also on the cards to boost the enjoyment of the day by the competitors.

Players competing in the event are all from leading companies based in Nigeria thus taking up sponsorship will create significant brand exposure for your company.

Managing Director, ARM Properties Plc, Wale Odutola, told The Guardian in an interview Sunday that the choice of format of the club anniversary/Nigeria Independence tourney was because: “We wanted something that was a bit more fun, different and group oriented and not necessarily the stroke-play or some other individual thing we play every other day. Added to this, the tournament is about bringing people together. Being a scramble event, it will enable us bring, for instance, four friends representing their countries together, where they would celebrate our club’s anniversary and Nigeria’s independence.

“Given where we are coming from, having started off with zero members, we thought it would be nice to use this occasion to let people who do not know of our existence to do so and come celebrate with us. In addition to this, we see it as an opportunity to celebrate our country’s independence celebration. These are some of the objectives of the tournament.

On the club’s first year of operation, he said, “our first year of operation has been very revealing especially in the area of golf potentials in Nigeria. When you conceptualize something like this, a lot of the data that you would be working with are based on existing facilities and what you think is possible. But what we have seen, including the level and quality of patronage has exceeded our expectations. This, to some extent shows us that we are on the right trajectory.

He continued, “over the while, we have gotten a number of requests from companies coming forward to stage their tournaments here among other things, but we have asked them to give us sometime before we are able to do that. By the time we are done, this would be the first port of call for outfits and companies that want to host competitions. We desire to place this facility in its rightful place on the golfing map of Nigeria and West Africa and indeed the world.”

Having said that, he added that, “this competition will be the first of the many we expect to have at the club. So far, we are quite optimistic with what we can achieve with the facility in the next few months.
