Smoking Oparaku Shoots Course Record on Day One

Kingsley Oparaku is leading the pack of professionals after first round at the Abia State Governor’s Cup courtesy of his brilliant score of 67, four under par, which has again been established as the course record at the newly refurbished golf course.

Abubakar Mustapha of Ilorin Golf Club and Luka Agwom of IBB International Golf Club Abuja are both five shots off Oparakwu in joint fourth place.

Meanhwile, Air Assault category one player, Noah John leads his category with his 73, two over par carding while Enugu based Monday Ugiagbe is wresting the Seniour Tour leadership with Lateef lasisi as both players shot 76, five over a piece during the opening round.

Mike Alika, the General Manager of the Professional Golfers Association of Nigeria has praised the setting for the event, describing it as one of the best, adding that he hopes the event makes a permanent return to the Association’s calendar.

“Aba Golf Club is a very hospitable club. Both professional and amateurs always crave a date here and with the setting we have here, I am sure we they are already looking forward to making it a regular on the calendar.” He said.

The event has N5million naira purse in total for the professionals while amateur players vying for honours over the weekend will be carting home trophies and golf gift items for their effort.
