This could read like a fairy tale. Kaduna Golf Club based category one player, Musa Achayi, was last week away to the Lamingo Golf Club in Jos to be part of the Professional Golfers Association Qualifying School. Here, 81 amateurs were jostling to be part of the Pro cadre. When the competitive event came to a close, Achayi came out as one of the eight that prevailed.
While the press conference of the Kadinvest was on in Kaduna last Friday, a thoroughly pleased Captain of the Club, Col. Ibrahim introduced him to a whole lot of media men who offered him a standing ovation.
Four days later, Achayi joined a tough field on an unprecedented 156 professionals in just one golf event and carded a stunning 2 over, just two shot away from what dreaded Nigeria’s greatest, Ochei Odoh could muster. What a thrill.
“I was into basketball all my years,” Achayi said. “I even coached basketball at the Kaduna State Sports Council. When I came into golf, it was like something I need to pass away time. I had no dream I would ever make it as a Pro Golfer. Now I am in and the whole thing is still like a dream. A lot of people are telling me I am having an easy ride but I won’t let that get into my head. If I can break into the first 15 in this tourney, I must have done wonderfully well. This is my first tourney and I am not set to beat the Odohs and Emos Korblah just yet. I am bidding my time”.
Well, let’s watch how the clock ticks for this young prodigy when the Kadinvest tourney ends this Sunday.
