There is no disputing the fact that Sunday Olapade has in recent years made his mark and becoming a force to reckon with in Nigeria professional golf as well as in West Africa.
Thus, after Sunday victory of the 5th Chief Ikenna Okafor Golf Classic 2024, the Ikoyi Golf Club Lagos player maintained that he was dreaming to win more tournaments to prove that his current form was not a fluke.
Olapade who won his first Ikenna Okafor Classic in 2022 in told SOKOnnect in chat on Monday, “It feels good to become a champion; I’m winning this tournament for the second time, the first was in 2022. But most importantly, I want to keep winning tournaments to justify my current even as you cannot predict golf, it’s good to always come tops.”
To emerge champion of the 2024 Classic which had participation from across Africa, Olapade played a brilliant 65, 71, 69, 66; 271 gross, 17 under course par over four days at the Python Golf Club, Port Harcourt. Recall Olapade in 2023 also won a Ghanaian championship representing Nigeria.
His closest rival in the second position was Zambian Sydney Wemba who shot 70, 69, 71, 67; 277 gross, 11 under; while Visitor Mapwanya of Zimbabwe, Bulabula Michael of Cameroon and Monday Eze of Nigeria (Ikoyi Club) tied for the third position with 280 gross, 8 under course par over four days.
The PGA of Nigeria Secretary, Jide Bolaji, while commending Olapade over his victory asserted that the association was most grateful to the Classic sponsor, Chief Ikenna Okafor, for remaining consistent and committed in ensuring the continuity of the tournament.
The secretary concluded by admonishing the players to maintain the standard expected of professionals to avoid bringing the game to disrepute.
